KumbulaAfrica
Ideas & Research

Memory without inquiry becomes nostalgia.

KumbulaAfrica wants to understand not only what Africa remembers, but what that knowledge means for how we live, build, organise, trade, lead and imagine the future.

This is where cultural memory meets research, and where ideas are expected to survive challenge.

The 14 Seeds

A framework for thinking longer.

The 14 Seeds are KumbulaAfrica's evolving intellectual framework for examining continuity, capability and long-term African development.

They begin from a recurring observation:

Africa often has more than the dominant story suggests.

The question is frequently not simply:

What is missing?

But also:

What exists, and why is it not translating into sustained value?

The Seeds explore this across four broad areas.

Pillar One

Imagination, Story & Time

  • Who gets to imagine the future?
  • What stories shape what people believe is possible?
  • What changes when businesses, governments, families and institutions think in generations rather than short cycles?
Pillar Two

Systems, Movement & Capacity

  • Where are people, knowledge, goods, capital and opportunity getting stuck?
  • What enables participation?
  • Which systems convert talent into productive capability — and which quietly waste it?
Pillar Three

Stewardship, Creation & Care

  • How do we create value without exhausting the people or environments producing it?
  • How should African economies think about land, food, work, wellbeing, production and ownership?
  • What changes when care is treated as infrastructure rather than sentiment?
Pillar Four

Governance, Alignment & Reality

  • How do trust, incentives, leadership, capital and institutional design affect what gets built?
  • How do we design for the conditions that actually exist?
  • And how do institutions retain learning instead of repeatedly starting again?

Research themes

KumbulaAfrica's developing research agenda.

Theme 01

African Consumer Behaviour

How culture, identity, income, context and changing aspirations shape how African consumers behave.

Theme 02

Culture & Economic Behaviour

How values, norms, trust, identity and inherited practices influence participation in markets and institutions.

Theme 03

Agriculture, Food & Indigenous Knowledge

What food, land, traditional crops, agricultural practices and indigenous knowledge can teach us about resilience and future food systems.

Theme 04

Women & Economic Participation

The systems that influence access to capital, markets, networks, time, care and opportunity.

Theme 05

Leadership & Institutional Continuity

Why knowledge disappears from organisations, why so much depends on individuals, and what it takes to build institutions capable of learning across leadership transitions.

Theme 06

Behaviour, Choice & Human Flourishing

How behavioural design can help people make better choices without reducing human beings to conversion targets.

Theme 07

African Futures & Long-Term Thinking

How African organisations and societies might build differently when the time horizon expands beyond immediate survival.

The Long Horizon

What happens when we stop treating short-termism as inevitable?

The Long Horizon is KumbulaAfrica's developing body of work on institutional continuity and generational thinking.

  • Businesses need quarterly results.
  • Governments face election cycles.
  • Funders operate grant periods.
  • Individuals need to survive now.

Those realities matter. But something also has to hold the longer question:

What are we building that will still matter when the current leadership is gone?

The Long Horizon explores how knowledge, capital, culture, systems and institutions can compound instead of repeatedly resetting.

Kumbula Dispatch

Thinking in public.

Not every important idea begins as a formal research paper. The Kumbula Dispatch is where we write through questions as they emerge.

Essays, observations, field notes, cultural reflections, research summaries and questions still being worked through.

Some Dispatch ideas will remain essays. Some will become research. Some may become products, gatherings or entirely new projects.

Kumbula Institute

Long horizon · not yet an operating institute

The long-term home for the intellectual work.

KumbulaAfrica is gradually developing toward a formal research and ideas institution capable of producing credible, useful African knowledge.

The ambition is not research for shelves. It is work that can inform:

Business decisions, public policy, development programmes, investment, education, community initiatives, and how Africans understand the possibilities available to us.

The Kumbula Institute is part of our long horizon and will be built as the body of work, partnerships and institutional capability mature.
